Day 18

Today I had the opportunity to visit a classical school.  The students here study history, philosophy, Greek, and subjects that are part of “classical” education. When we arrived the teacher was unsure of why we were there so she asked whether we were there to tour or speak with the students. About 30 seconds into the tour the teacher asked a group of female students to join us. It was great because these students had so many questions about the United States. By the end of the morning I was sitting in a room with about 20 students who were asking questions about our education system and about our culture and I was also able to ask them questions as well. This was by far my favorite vocational day.  I teach because I love students and today reminded of why students are great!  I really felt like I had accomplished one of the GSE goals when one of the girls stopped me and asked if there was Rotary for teens. I told her about Interact and asked the Rotarian that was with us if there were any clubs in the area (clubs aren’t part of school here). I wish I had taken a photo with them but we were having so much fun I didn’t even think about it.

We then had a Rotary lunch, which was quite fun. We were asked to give our entire presentation in five minutes or less, which is not an easy task when you have five speakers but we made it happen. The table I sat with had the most lovely people, they all spoke excelent English and although they were serious at a Rotary meeting you could tell that they each had a goofy side.

Then we met met up with our guide from yesterday and she took us to Nervi where we saw two museums of modern art, 1880- 1940‘s ish.

The expression is great and its made of chalk.

The detail of the inlay was incredible.

Glass from the late 20's
Before we left Genova, she asked if we would like to take a walking tour of her neighborhood, a historic fishing village.

Upon return from Narvi she pointed us in the direction of a nice restaurant. Since we had enjoyed her company so much we invited her to dinner.

Looking down at the Restaurant -  still the Italian Riviera, we are so blessed

fried anchovies- a local dish and quite good!
The friendships continued to grow and after dinner she invited us to come to her house to see the view of the ocean. This was a great honor and truly represented the relationship we have developed with her.
